United States Army Testimonial for Leadership Professional Speaker, Laura Benjamin

Headquarters, 7th Infantry Division & Fort Carson, Fort Carson CO, 2005

Dear Ms. Benjamin,

I am writing to thank you for the professional service you provided during the Annual 7th Infantry Division Senior Leader/Spouse Conference held on June 17, 2005. Your overall program of Team Dimensions provided practical tools for the attendees to use individually and to share with their teams at home. Your ability to facilitate the entire day’s conference was extremely helpful for the 7th Infantry Division and Fort Carson coordination staff for this event. Thank you for your continued support of the 7th ID and Fort Carson.

Sincerely,
Robert W. Mixon Jr., Major General, U.S. Army, Commanding

Dear Laura,

Your participation and presentations in past conferences and seminars for the spouses at Ft. Carson and Ft. Lewis have been some of the most valuable, useful, and enjoyable of my many years in dealing with family members of soldiers of all ranks and stations.

As a de facto senior leader because of my husband’s commands, it has fallen to me to be the person who is responsible in good part for the promotion of Army family programs, community projects, and information on soldier issues that affect families and their well-being, especially critical during this current Global War on Terror.

As you have stressed over and over again, communication is vital to understanding, cooperation, personal relationships, and your concepts have greatly aided and increased our abilities in those areas. I know that for many it was a journey of self-discovery, and all in such a very positive way. As you know, the feedback from those who participated was all very enthusiastic and appreciative. Many women I spoke with had never had the opportunity to assess or test their skills and preferences before with regard to leadership positions, and your model helped them do that.

I have learned so much about tailoring my expectations and approach to others and their needs and expectations. I know I have become a better friend and mentor, spouse and mother to those who relate to me in those roles. I quickly felt more at ease in my position and with my responsibilities, and certainly enjoyed them more than I thought I would.

On a personal note, now that I have “retired”, I truly miss those opportunities to have those interactions, but I know that those skills will be of constant use in this new life of mine.

Sincerely, Vivian Soriano, Colorado Springs CO, 2006

Participant Comments: The best thing I learned today...

"The triangle of victim, villain, hero was something I had never heard addressed before."

"Thank you! I love your style in presenting the material. Many great nuggets to take with me." (S.R.)

"Thanks! Liked your examples and stories. Also the Team Dimensions Profile - how individual personalities/skills/gifts can be used effectively to help a team succeed." (A.R.)

"The roles we play as a victim, hero, or villain. Laura's teaching skills were very insightful - class was very informative and not boring."

"I greatly liked the discussion of the Bermuda Triangle (villain, victim, hero). It has taken quite a while for one to learn the importance of the points between 'circumstances faced' and 'actions taken' in the C.A.R.L.A. Concept. Leadership is so much listening and understanding." (C.M.)
