1. How to Handle a "Bully" Boss (a real life story with dramatization)
=========================================
Once upon a time, in a corporation far, far away, there was a "Bully"
Boss who made a habit of embarassing, berating, and belittling his team
at every opportunity. It was particularly hard to handle during team
meetings, whether they were "live" or on teleconference. His
eyes would bore into that week's victim and the tirade would shrink the
once calm, confident, competent worker into a trembling, terrified shadow of
his former self. His co-workers would watch in horrified silence, drawn
to the carnage like a moth to a flame, yet fearful they would be
next!
Until one day, a brave soul verging on the edge of impending retirement and
with little left to lose, decided enough was enough. She rallied the troops
with these inspiring words: "No longer will we sit idly by and let one of our
own be torn to pieces by this monster...er, manager," she cried! "We will
close ranks and take a stand together, united, till death do us part."
(Oops, wrong vow)
The next morning, an eerie calm snaked it's way through the phone lines as
the weekly teleconference began. The person with an opinion was the day's
first victim. Our manager was about to make verbal mincemeat out of the poor
fellow until a quiet voice interrupted. "I agree with Bob. His numbers are
sound and he makes good sense." Then another voice chimed in, "I like his idea;
its a good way to go." Then another, "I think we're making great progress here."
Every time the manager opened his mouth to take another bite from his dish of
the day, co-workers championed support with positive statements. It didn't
take long for the "we've got your back" message to temper his appetite.
This true story from an operations environment shows a very different side
to the meaning of teamwork. Was it a subtle form of mutiny or leadership
courage at its best? Let us know what you think! Would this work in your
organization?
