What is a Blog? What is a Blog? A blog is short for "weblog" - originally used as an author's online diary or journal. It is a form of personal publishing, typically focused on one in-depth topic or subject. Each time the author posts a new entry to their Blog, the post is automatically distributed to anyone who subscribed to their Feed. What is a Feed? A feed is the mechanism used to distribute content in digital form. Usually used for news and blog websites, feeds can also distribute digital content like music, pictures and video. Feeds are driven by RSS or "really simple syndication", which is the term that describes the technology used to create the feed. What's the difference between Email and a Feed? A "feed" is a form of communication that goes around an email system straight to a users feedreader, which can be found in their browser's "favorites" folder. It is more "pull" than "push". Feed subscribers want to receive the updated content vs. email recipients who often do NOT wish to receive all the emails they get! It is a consumer-controlled form of communication. What's wrong with email? Experts say that over 90% of the email sent these days is spam, which has prompted individuals and organizations to install aggressive spam filters. This means that many of those who subscribe to email newsletters do not get them, making an email newsletter an inefficient way to deliver content. As spam increases and as consumers rebel, RSS Feed technology will become increasingly popular. This is one of the reasons why, after eight years of publishing my email newsletter, I re-routed thousands of subscribers over to my blogs in March 2008. Does subscribing to a Feed cost money? No, it's free! How do I signed up for your blog(s)? Go to the blog that captures you're interest and click on the orange button which will take you to my Feed page. In the upper left corner is an icon with the words, "Subscribe to this feed". Click on it and it will automatically add the blog name to your Favorites Title Box. You can also click on the "subscribe by email" if you prefer that method. That's all there is to it! Just check your favorites on a regular basis for the archived posts, which will be updated automatically. If you ever want to cancel my blog, just delete it from your Favorites box. (Of course, I hope you never do!) How does a Blog Feed differ from a Website? A feed can have the same content as a webpage. When you subscribe to the feed on someone's website, your web browser automatically checks and downloads new content. Rather than revising that site, you receive any new information automatically! This saves you time and effort. What's so special about your Blog posts? My Colorado Communication Coach Blog covers current events and topics related to interpersonal communication in any form. The posts are written in the same lively, humorous and occasionally irreverent style you may have experienced in my newsletters with the added bonus of video, photographs and links to related resources. Can I use a Blog to market my business or promote my writing? You sure can! Setting up a blog is fast and easy. If you use the right keyword phrases, tags and categories, your posts may be picked up by journalists, radio program directors, reporters, potential clients, etc. It's also likely you will experience higher search engine rankings since Google loves the updated content and subject matter focus that blogs provide. Can you help me set up a Blog? Yes, I've helped a number of clients set up their own blogs and have taught them how to post effectively. Please call me at 719-266-8088 and we'll chat about your subject matter expertise and how a blog can help you increase visibility, promote your cause or build your business!
